San Francisco, Calif., Nov. 1, 1855. Handwritten letter (4 p.) to friend with details of his voyage aboard the clipper ship, The Challenger, to San Francisco by way of Cape Horn. Having arrived safely he writes that he has not found work as a clerk in San Francisco and will be continuing on the ship to Hong Kong via Honolulu. He is uncertain of further ports of call and expects to be back in Boston by "the ensuing summer." He also writes of the long ocean journey out of sight of land for most of it and the difficult conditions aboard the ship. Boston, Mass., Oct. 6, 1857. Handwritten letter (2 p.) from Jackson who is about to embark again on The Challenger to his friend with details of a gift of book and a pen and best wishes for health and prosperity until he returns.
